The potential employer says their contract is standard and cannot be changed. Should I still have it reviewed?
Absolutely! What is considered standard by the potential employer may still be one-sided and unfavorable to you. For example, there may be a restrictive covenant, such as a non-compete, which is overly broad. Or, there may be a termination clause that allows your potential employer to terminate you with little or no notice. Even if they say “no changes” are allowed, it’s not uncommon for employers to make limited exceptions or to modify exhibits to clarify ambiguous language, define call schedules, or provide signing bonuses or relocation reimbursements. Finally, it’s prudent for you to understand your contract before you sign it because it puts you in a better position if issues come up later. A review can help you determine in advance what happens if you resign or are terminated, what “tail” malpractice policy coverage obligations you may have, and how your compensation may be affected. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
